To get the advantage, you need  operating system and / or applications which support thread-level parallelism. In simple English Windows XP or Windows 2000 or similar.  Also there are more than 200 applications, such as Adobe's Photoshop CS, Roxio VideoWave 7.0 and most of the high end video editing applications    which can take advantage of dual core CPU. Ideally it is the best for the high end video editing applications. Windows XP is a multitasking environment, and as such, there are usually applications running in both the foreground (such as the browser you are using to read this) and the background (such as real-time virus scanning). A dual-core processor should execute the multiple threads of these applications more efficiently.

Intel claims it saw from 50- 124% performance gains for a dual-core-based system over one using a 3.73GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition on its own multimedia application tests. For more-mainstream programs, Intel estimates about a 40% performance improvement.
