Why we advice you not to buy a brand name computer
- Possibility of upgrading the processor (the brain) of the computer will be minimal. This
is due to the limitations of the power supply and motherboards they use.
- You may have to pay through the roof for any parts you have to replace once warranty
period is over. Most of the brand name parts are more expensive than generic parts.
- Most of the brand name computers does not have a PCI Express16 slot. (Verify that with
your sales person). So in future if you need better graphics performance for demanding
games, photo editing, extensive multimedia work or any other you may have very
limited choices. Games in future will be more demanding than ever.
- Brand name computers on the market may be lacking in some standard features everybody
expect to be there. Typical examples are PS2 ports and standard printer ports.
- More expensive than no-name brand computer with equal specifications.
- You have no choice of the operating system (Windows ) You have to buy the version of
Windows they offer or have to pay extra to buy the operating system of your choice.
- Any minor change to standard configuration, like a request to upgrade the memory
to 4Gig may be impossible or prohibitively expensive.
Advantage of buying a brand name computer
- You will get a better after sales service (On the average). But I have seen instances
where they have not acknowledged a problem which is well documented on their web
site, when the customer contacted the vendor. (Example . Brand name laptop shutting down
after a while due to overheating. They had a firmware upgrade for the problem on the web
site. But when the customer contacted the supplier they said it is a problem with Windows
XP )
- At least the company (or another company who bought the company) will be there
when you need the service. In the no name brand computer sector there are lot of shops
which close the door within 1 - 2 years
- Better build quality on the average, except some exceptions like i-Com computers sold
through Target retail chain.
