ATX case, What is ATX and why ATX
ATX is a case and power supply specification system introduced by intel in
mid 90s. ATX power supply has a single connector to the motherboard, which is fool
proof . The old AT type power supply had two power connectors and if you plug them the
wrong way you may damage the motherboard.
Also ATX power supply provides more efficient power source by providing 3.3 volt line which is more closer to what today's processors need.
How to identify whether you have an ATX or AT power supply.
1. If you run Windows 95, 98 or later and when you select shut down you may be running with an ATX type case.
2. If you look at the back of the case you may find the keyboard, mouse and some other connectors are inside a small replaceable metal plate of size about 160mm x 42 mm
3. If you can look inside the case, the connector coming from the power supply (The big box where the power line from the wall connect to) to the mother board is a single 20 wire connector.
Can I mount an ATX motherboard in an AT case.
Mounting holes and external openings of ATX cases are different to AT cases and hence it is not possible to mount an ATX motherboard inside an AT case without major modifications.
