What is ATX ?. ATX is the power supply and case format introduced by Intel with the introduction of Pentium pro processor (long forgotten). It has certain features like ability to shut it self down and also wake up from sleep modes on various activities including modem ring. Not all Pentium II and III computers use ATX type power supply and cases. There are many motherboards which uses the AT type cases to accommodate Pentium II and III. If you are upgrading your motherboard, processor or even the graphics card, it is important to have adequate and spare power. Also most new graphics cards needs at least 400w power supply. If you have problems when you install a new graphics card make sure you have adequate power supply as well. Read the detail under the hood, as not all 300w power supply units are equal. Read our minimum recommendation for an ATX power supply here. Pentium 4 cases. Some older versions of Pentium 4 will require new cases with mounting points for the processor. You may not be able to use the standard ATX case you have. But the processors based on Socket 472 will use standard ATX case with Pentium 4 compatible power supply. So if you like to case you have you can only replace the power supply to upgrade to Pentium 4. (Sept 2002). With the introduction of new LGA775 Pentium4 processors, Intel has introduced new 24 pin and 6 pin connector to the motherboard, Most motherboard may still accept a normal 20 pin and 6 pin connectors.
