Upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 using third party tools

Using Microsoft products

There is no upgrade path provided by Microsoft to upgrade from XP to Windows 7. If you want to follow that path only way is to upgrade XP to corresponding version of Vista and then  upgrade Vista to corresponding version of Windows 7.
For example if you have Windows XP professional, you need to upgrade to Windows Vista Business (or Ultimate) and then Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional . If you have upgraded to Vista Ultimate you need to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate. This is an expensive process, considering the cost of the software you need to purchase for the intermediate steps.

If you are happy to reinstall all the software on the new PC, then the guide provided by www.pcworld.com may be a good read. Use the Windows Easy transfer tool provided by Microsoft to transfer the data to a safe location first. Once you have installed Windows 7 read the Microsoft tutorial on "Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7"

Using third party tools

We have tried several commercial tools with limited success. If you want to give them a try just make sure there is some local contact number available. You don't want to be paying international telephone call rates to listen to "Your call is important to us messages".

Commercial tools available.

  • Laplink PC Mover Professional.  Price $59. Everything went smoothly. Microsoft Office XP and QuickBooks
had to be reactivated, as they have detected the I am running on a new PC. If you are buying directly from
Laplink, make sure you buy the correct version, as the cheaper version upgrade assistant cannot be used to
    transfer to a new PC.
  • Parallels Desktop® for Upgrading to Windows 7. Price $ 48 at amazon.com
Need double the hard drive space free. If if your current hard drive is 30GB full, you need total of 90GB drive for the migration. Not clear whether you can upgrade to 64 bit version of Windows 7, which is included with most laptops these days. Re-activation needed for most software which track the licensing violations.
Don't forget the read the reviews of Amazon customers who bought this product.
  • ZInstall (No information about the working ?) price $89
